London’s HIV Ambassadors Programme has made fantastic progress in 2024–25, significantly advancing efforts to combat HIV stigma and enhance awareness across the capital. Working in collaboration with Terrence Higgins Trust and other partners, Fast-Track Cities London have developed the programme to empower individuals living with HIV to share their personal experiences and educate diverse audiences.
In the past year, HIV Ambassadors delivered impactful talks to 3,434 people across 20 London boroughs, extending their outreach to Dartford & Gravesham and Ashford & St Peter’s NHS Trusts. Their presence on social media has also seen Ambassador-related posts gaining 19,279 views.
The programme has seen a significant increase in diversity among its Ambassadors. In its second year, 25 new Ambassadors were recruited and trained, including the first heterosexual man, the first South Asian woman, and the youngest Ambassador to date. This diverse representation ensures that the programme reflects the varied experiences within the HIV community.
The programme’s efforts have led to significant improvements in understanding and attitudes towards HIV for those attending Ambassador talks:
- A 34% increase in confidence among healthcare professionals when discussing HIV with patients and colleagues.
- A 96% rise in confidence in offering HIV tests.
- A 78% increase in attendees reporting they would take no additional precautions when treating someone living with HIV.
These statistics reflect a significant shift towards more informed and supportive practices in healthcare settings.
The HIV Ambassadors Programme continues to be a vital force in transforming perceptions and practices related to HIV in London, demonstrating the power of lived experience and community engagement in driving social change to reduce HIV stigma and discrimination.
