From October 2023, everyone who has a blood test as part of their over 40 NHS Health Check in City and Hackney will be tested for HIV, unless they opt-out. The 12-month pilot seeks to identify new cases of HIV as well as those lost to care. Early diagnosis leads to more effective treatment options and better long-term outcomes. Individuals living with HIV who start treatment early can enjoy healthier, longer lives. This programme will help to connect those who need it to the right care.

How will it work?

HIV testing will be included as part of the routine blood test carried out with an over 40s NHS Health Check. Results will be kept confidential and if you don’t want to be tested, you can let a staff member know and opt-out. If you don’t need to take a blood test as part of your health check, you may request a HIV test, so please speak to a member of staff.
